Nathan MacKinnon shares the hilarious way Nazem Kadri left the Avalanche group chat
Nazem Kadri was a pivotal part of the Colorado Avalanche's Stanley Cup victory. When he made his return to the lineup just two weeks after thumb surgery, you could feel the momentum shift further in the Avs direction. Despite what Kyle Dubas and the Maple Leafs' brass felt, he was the heart and soul type player that the teams so desperately needed, and the Avs knew it.
Without a contract leading into next season, Kadri's former teammates in Colorado were truly hoping he'd return to Denver. Some going as far as to pressure Kadri in the team group chat to consider taking a lower value deal to remain with the Avs. Retaining Kadri would have kept the Avalanche in heavy favourite territory for next season.
Ultimately Kadri decided the offer from the Avalanche wasn't enough. The deal which was believed to be shorter term and for approximately $2,000,000 less per season, would have definitely represented a team friendly deal. So while Kadri entertained his former teammates idea of taking a deal, it definitely wasn't a priority for him.
During the NHLPA preseason media tour Nathan MacKinnon joined the crew of the 32 Thoughts Podcast and he shared the story of how Kadri informed his teammates he was leaving.
Nathan MacKinnon on the 32 Thoughts podcast said that the most interesting move made this past offseason that could impact the Avs road to repeat was Kadri going to Calgary. Kadri texted the Avs group chat saying, "I don't give any deals," then exited the chat.
It's that attitude in which Kadri is willing to bet on himself that helped him secure his brand new deal with the Flames. With both teams in different divisions we could be heading for a collision course between the two teams in the Western Conference Finals.
