Russian-born hockey players have had a hard time either leaving or re-entering the country for some time due to the rules and the political climate of the country. Including Philadephia Flyers goalie prospect Ivan Fedotov, who was asked to serve in the military in order to keep him from coming to North America to join the Flyers organization.

It appears according to Russ Cohen Flyers prospect writer for EP Rinkside Fedotov has left the army and will have to continue his career in Russia, take a look:

Getting word that CSKA GM said he expects Ivan Fedotov back from the army to play for his team for the rest of his career. #Flyers #KHL

Fedotov is expected to stay with CSKA, his KHL club according to their general manager.

This is just another example of why drafting or letting Russian-born players return or play in their native country is a bad idea right now.

Not only did the government force Fedotov into the military as soon as they found out he might want to leave the country for a better, more stable life and career, but they're forcing him to stay with his KHL team.

This development could have a huge impact on players like Matvei Michkov's draft status. With Michkov signed for 4 more years it is unlikely the league will allow him out of his deal. This will likely push him much further down the draft list for many teams.
