When the Ottawa Senators completed the trade to acquire Matt Murray from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange to a 2nd round pick, they likely felt their goalie search was over. Fast forward 2 years and 47 starts later it appears the Senators are done with the Matt Murray experiment. The Senators aggressively tried to trade Murray at the Entry Draft with no luck.

Now according to Frank Seravalli, the Senators are beginning to get desperate to attempt to avoid buying Murray out. But Ottawa's ambitious off-season plans seem to hinge on clearing that money.

Seravalli says that Ottawa is trying to move Murray as quickly and efficiently as possible. He says it will be expensive with 'major sweeteners'. Frank believes that a last resort is a buyout, which would save Ottawa $5M in real cash.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers appear to be the last remaining teams in the hunt for a goaltender, so it will be interesting to see how this game of chicken continues.

Buying out Murray would open up cap space for the Senators who are looking to be aggressive on the free agent market.
