Today PK Subban announced his surprise retirement at the age of 32. The 13-year NHL veteran played last season with the New Jersey Devils putting up 22 points in 77 games. Back in March the Devils General Manager informed Subban that the Devils had decided to go in a different direction and had no interest in extending his contract.

So in July Subban hit the free agent market in hopes of finding a new NHL deal. While it was reported the San Jose Sharks had some interest earlier this summer it turns out Subban only had his eyes on playing for one of two teams.

According to Brian Lortie, Subban was hoping to return to Canada and play for either the Canadiens or the Maple Leafs, but neither team had interest.

Can't 100% confirm if this is true but 2 different #NHL employees have told me that P.K. Subban had his eyes set on either a #GoHabsGo reunion or a final shot at the Cup with #LeafsForever. That were the only 2 options in his mind. When both doors closed, he was done.

At 33, he wanted to be chose where he wanted to finish his career. He knew the back issues were going to prevent him from being the P.K. of old, but he still had gas left in the tank for one more run.

It's very interesting that the Maple Leafs who are weak on the right side were unwilling to see what Subban had left in the tank, even as a professional tryout. Subban retires having won a Norris Trophy, but having never won a Stanley Cup.
