One of the best hockey players to ever hail from Newfoundland and Labrador has tragically passed away at the age of 91.

A hockey legend and arguably the greatest hockey player Newfoundland has ever produced is sadly no longer with us.

He was good enough to have played with the Montreal Canadiens organization back in the 1950s when that team was laden with such greats as Jean Beliveau and Maurice Richard.

Rest in peace George Faulkner

George Faulkner dressed for the Canadiens' minor league affiliate, the Shawinigan Falls Cataracts.

He did some damage on the international scene as well, leading Team Canada in scoring during the 1966 World Hockey Championships en route to the bronze medal.

Although he never went on to have an NHL career himself, Faulkner's love of the game simply never dwindled. He went on to play hockey into his 80s and touched generations of players, including legends like Douglas Moores.

"He was an outstanding man. I'm very glad to have had the relationship that I had with him for 66 years," Moores told CBC News Monday.

"George is a legend. I'm glad I knew a legend."

"He maintained that personality right through his whole life. I mean I've never been in a situation with Georgie, on the ice, off the ice, in the dressing room or in the social gathering, where George was not ... well respected and well liked. And he was just a tremendous personality on every level of his life."

Although hockey was so big in his life, even a family sport, he did not pursue a career in the NHL; his brother did.

The Faulkner brothers were all hockey stars. George's younger brother, Alex, would become the province's first NHLer back in the early 1960s, first with the Toronto Maple Leafs and then the Detroit Red Wings.

Faulkner's successes with the senior hockey leagues brought in numerous championships, but what he did for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador far exceeds anything that he did on the ice.

He was a big man with a heart of gold who was admired by all due to his kindness and his giving ways.

A wonderful hero in our community has been lost. We would like to express our sincerest condolences to his wife Barbara Jean and the Faulkner family.
