Reports of conflict between star player and Rangers' coach Gallant

The emergence of Igor Shesterkin as one of the NHL's absolute best starting goaltenders has been incredible for the Rangers this season, but has also masked some obvious flaws in the team in front of him. The Rangers' skaters have been inconsistent at best, including their star forward Artemi Panarin. Now, there's reported to be friction brewing between Panarin and head coach Gerard Gallant.

Panarin has been known to be a streaky offensive player, having incredibly impressive hot streaks accompanied by long scoring droughts. Currently, Panarin has gone 13 straight games without an even-strength goal, while looking pedestrian and hesitant in his play away from the puck. As per Larry Brooks of the New York Post, Panarin believes his struggles may be the fault of Gallant.

Several sources have suggested that Panarin may feel constrained playing for Gallant, whose system is more structured than that of predecessor David Quinn, with an emphasis on chipping pucks out of the zone on the breakout. Hence, there are fewer home-run passes, fewer odd-man breaks through the neutral zone (unless triggered by Igor Shesterkin) and less open ice on which Panarin can work.

If the Rangers view themselves as cup contenders this year, this issue must be solved. Feeling constrained, or frustrated by the systems Gallant employs will only worsen Panarin's play and trust in the organization. Whether the solution entails Panarin buying into Gallant's tight-checking style of play, or getting the freedom to cheat offensively more often, Panarin's production will be crucial to the Rangers' success.

With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, perhaps the Rangers will look at add a offensively minded playmaker to mitigate the loss of Pavel Buchnevich. However, regardless of trade deadline moves, the Rangers need Panarin produce offensively, and potentially repair the relationship with the coaching staff to have success in the playoffs.
