A very scary injury situation occurred this afternoon in a game in the American Hockey League between the Charlotte Checkers and the Providence Bruins. Providence defender and former a former NHL veteran Mike Reilly went crashing into the end boards violently in the middle of the third period.

A Charlotte forward carried the puck and gained speed and momentum past Reilly in the Providence end. Reilly tried to recover and position himself in front of the Charlotte forward. As Reilly tried to reposition himself he successfully poked checked the puck away making a nice defensive recovery. In doing so, he lost his balance and crashed into the end boards hard.

Reilly did not get up or even move. Other players on the ice were immediate calling for medical attention. It really was a scary moment. Check out the replay below.

This was one of those bad collisions you hate see any player experience. Moving at high rates of speed and battling for position, sometimes it's a wonder this doesn't happen more to professional hockey players. Hopefully Reilly will be OK and get the medical attention he deserves and make a full recovery.

This season Reilly has skated in thirty four games for Providence and ten games for the Boston Bruins.

The good thing is that Reilly appears to be okay according to Mark Allred:

What a scary situation, Mike Reilly is lucky he was able to regain consciousness.
