Senators preparing for camp without key forward
After signing Josh Norris, Tyler Motte, and Tim Stutzle, Pierre Dorion isn't done working on the Ottawa Senators roster.
There remains one player left to be signed, with limited cap space and that is Alex Formenton.
It was said that the two camps were in talks and Formenton was to be signed by the 20th and we're 2 days out from Dorion's timeframe, what is the issue?
Should Formenton not get the deal he wants, will he sit out the first part of the season?
The current cap space avaible for Dorion to utilize is $5.9 million, so what may be the hold-up?
Ottawa Senators GM Pierre Dorion one of the undisputed stars of the '22 off-season has the cap room to sign Formenton to a longer deal if he chooses, but the executive is said to still be poking around for more help on the blue line.
Formenton is the last remaining RFA in Ottawa, and not locking down a player like Formenton, who had a breakout season last year would be a mistake.
The left-winger has been with the club since 2017-2018 and his last contract was $888K AAV for the last 3 years.
Formenton undoubtedly may be looking for a raise, given 2022-2023 was a successful season for him.
Dorion could offer him a bridge deal, until his next contract and still pay him and find the blueliner needed, it's just a matter of priority for the GM.
