The Dallas Stars announced today that their top defenceman Miro Heiskanen will be out indefinitely with mononucleosis, the disease better known simply as mono. Also known as the kissing disease, mono causes extreme fatigue, fever, body aches, and can affect a person for as little as two weeks, or more than six months.

This will be a massive subtraction to the Stars' roster as they chase a playoff position for the rest of the season. Heiskanen has 29 points in 52 games this year, with stellar underlying numbers that have placed him in the Norris Trophy discussion, notably from Dom Luszczyszyn at Athletic

This could certainly impact Dallas' decision to move defender John Klingberg ahead of the trade deadline. There's now a strong possibility Klingberg remains a Star, and potentially, the Stars may look to add on defence to mitigate the loss of Heiskanen.

The Stars had been previously linked to Montreal Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry. It will be interesting to see how the announcement on Heiskanen might expedite a move for Petry or another blueliner.
