After a disappointing season for the Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager, Steve Yzerman announced today that the team had parted was with Head Coach, Jeff Blashill, Assistant Coach Doug Houda and Goaltending Coach Jeff Salajko.

This immediately sparked speculation about, who would be the right guy to come in to Detroit to be the next head coach? Steve Yzerman is building something special with the Red Wings, and with so much young talent finding the right mentor is imperative. With Lukas Raymond, Mortz Seider, Tyler Bertuzzi, Alex Nedeljkovic and Dylan Larkin, it's important to find someone who can hold them accountable and also nurture their talents. As we saw this year in Montreal, Dominique Ducharme almost singlehandedly ruined Cole Caufield's chances at the Calder Trophy.

According to Detroit Red Wings Hockey Reporter Kevin Allen:

Steve Yzerman wants a coach that will challenge his players and expect the most out of them every game something Yzerman didn't feel Jeff Blashill was doing.

Allen believes Steve Yzerman has 3 candidates he's considering to take the bench next season:

John Tortorella, this could be a very interesting yet controversial choice due to the style to which Tortorella coaches, he's as old school as it gets and definitely not always politically correct. There have been many stories shared by former players like Patrik Laine, Pierre Luc-Dubois and Josh Anderson, all who hated playing for Tortorella.

Paul Maurice, was one of the most respected coaches and has an amazing track record every where he's coached he's been well liked by fans and teammates. Many players in Winnipeg were saddened by Maurice's choice to step down during this season. Maurice said it was the best choice for the Winnipeg Jets and for himself.

Lane Lambert, is currently an Assistant Coach for the New York Islanders and he has a solid track record in that role under Barry Trotz. Lambert has developed as a great option and will likely find himself an NHL coaching job this summer. Lambert could provide a great option for a young NHL team looking to go in a new direction.
