Evolving Hockey's review of the recent free-agency transactions has brought up an interesting point, about Kyle Dubas.

Dubas the former agent and Toronto Marlies assistant General Manager has helped lead them to a Calder Cup in 2018. What he is doing now, deserves praise for a cash-strapped team, like the Maple Leafs.

While the Maple Leafs are currently $1 Million+ over cap, he found some value in free agency.

Dubas, signed players like Calle Jarnkrok, Mark Giordano, and Ilya Samsonov, under their projected market value, and continued the trend with Nicolas-Aube Kubel, Pierre Engvall, and Timothy Liljegren.

Maybe Dubas isn't so terrible at negotiating?

His signing of Michael Bunting who had a break-out year in 2021-2022, recently is under contract until 2023-2024, when he reaches UFA status, his current cap hit stands at $950K AAV a year, until then. By all means a discount for a young winger.

Mark Giordan's contract is the mother of all discounts and he may have, set a bad example when taking a hometown discount.

That was a major Dubas win for the Leafs for a veteran defenseman, who was until then the Seattle Kraken's Captain.
