The Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens both have had disappointing seasons. We saw them both become sellers at the trade deadline, the Flyers trades their captain Claude Giroux, Derrick Brassard and Justin Braun for picks and prospect, Owen Tippett.
The Canadiens dealt Ben Chiarot, Artturi Lehkonen, Tyler Toffoli and Andrew Hammond for picks and prospects Justin Barron and Tyler Smilanic and forward Tyler Pitlick.
However, many speculated that the Montreal Canadiens would of trade defenceman, Jeff Petry. Petry has been rumoured to be on the block since the game versus the Edmonton Oilers. A game where Petry didn't stick up for goaltender, Samuel Montembeault, after he was knocked down by Oilers' Zack Kassian.
Jeff Petry was heavily criticized by the media, fans and then head coach of the Canadiens, Dominique Ducharme. The reports then came in that the Canadiens were looking to deal Petry.
As we seen that didn't happen, but it wasn't for the lack trying. According to Sportsnet's, Eric Engels, the Montreal Canadiens GM, Kent Hughes and Philadelphia Flyers GM, Chuck Fletcher were working on a trade that would have sent Petry to the Flyers along with salary retention in exchange for Flyers forward James Van Riemsdyk as well as a solid young prospect.
Engels reported the two teams couldn't come to terms on the of the salary retention for Petry or the prospect. Engels believes that Fletcher and Hughes will meet again this off-season to try to make a deal with the Flyers very interested in the services of Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry.
