On Monday night, the Colorado Avalanche closed out the Western Conference Final over the Edmonton Oilers in a dominating 4-0 sweep. The biggest reason Colorado dominated the way that they did was because of Cale Makar. Makar had 9 points in the series, 5 came in game 4 along with the assist on the overtime winner. Makar became the first defenseman to record 5 points in a potential series clinching game. Only 2 other players have had more points, and one of them was Wayne Gretzky with 7.
Makar has been etching his name in the record books all postseason. Makar's 9 points in the Western Conference final, was only the fourth time in NHL history that has happened in a four game series by a defenseman. But one of those other times was Makar in the first round series against the Nashville Predators.
But probably the biggest honor he has received came Monday night during the NHL on TNT's post-game. The panel asked Wayne Gretzky on who he would compare Cale Makar to and already the 23 year-old has made a huge impression on the Great One.
The best defenseman the league has seen since Bobby Orr.
Comparing Cale Makar to Bobby Orr at this stage in his career is crazy to think about. But when you look at Makar's stats and the records he's already broken this postseason, maybe Gretzky knows best. It's not just offensively that Makar has taken over games either. When you're able to take out Connor McDavid on a one-on-one play, you're already one of the best defensive players in the league.
