The National Hockey League announced today that the salary cap will increase next season to $88 million dollars next season which is approximately $300,000 more than anticipated.

The cap floor rises to $65 million while the midpoint will be around $76.5 million. While nobody was certain where the cap would go for the 2024-2025 season, it's a welcome surprise that it is more than it was originally believed to be getting too.

The growth of the cap means a couple of things but the main thing is that the pace of growth was larger than expected. Many who watch the National Hockey League don't like Gary Bettman, but you have to admit that void of a couple of really bad mistakes that can't solely be blamed on him like having to relocate Atlanta to Winnipeg and now Phoenix to Utah, he's doing a rather good job.

If the economy could level off so that the Canadian dollar could be at par with the American dollar, you might get an opportunity for Bettman to announce one day that an expansion team has been awarded north of the border, but until that time even if it's tough we should give him some praises when it's due. Since he became commisioner in 1993 the league and the impact it has had around the world has become one hundred fold.
