NHL Insider Details Failed Trade Between Vancouver And San Jose That Led To Two Blockbuster Deals
There's been plenty of major NHL trades as of late, and now we know of one failed trade between division rivals that led to two major blockbuster deals.
On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins made not one but two surprising trades, but now, details have leaked of a failed trade that would have changed the entire deadline for Pittsburgh.
According to David Pagnotta, a failed trade between the Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks set off a string of moves that has ultimately led us to where we are today, and three different trades between four teams that never would have happened otherwise.
So what failed trade started it all? In Pagnotta's report, he reveals that the Canucks were preparing to send Vincent Desharnais to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Cody Ceci, but that deal never came to fruition.
After that, Ceci was ultimately combined in a package with Mikael Granlund and sent to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a first-round pick and a conditional third-round pick, both in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Then, the Canucks included Desharnais in a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins that saw them net Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor along with other assets, as the team boosted their blue line in a big way after trading J.T. Miller.
The final piece of this failed trade occurred during that trade on Wednesday, when the Sharks acquired Desharnais from Pittsburgh in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2028, bringing the whole failed deal full circle.
This is just another example of how one thing happening/not happening in the NHL can completely change things up at the deadline, and while San Jose ultimately landed Desharnais, the entire circumstances around the situation ended up very different to what they would have been if that deal went through.
