Ryan Suter is a rugged defender who plays every shift like it is his last. The defender leans on his opponents and leaves players thinking twice about going into a corner with him. Last night,, Suter found himself called for a penalty that likely had no business being called, especially in the playoffs.
When it comes to officiating the NHL offers inconsistency at best, tonight was another example of that. As Connor McDavid and Suter battle in the corner, Suter plays the physical stylings he is known for. While Sutter delivers a shot to McDavid, the referee behind the net decides to call a penalty.
On the play a frustrated McDavid delivered a stiff cross check to Suter in retaliation, but the referee didn't feel the retaliation was worth calling. Truthfully, in such an important playoff game, neither of these players actions really equals the level of what should need to occur for a penalty to be called. This just appears to be another example of a player or McDavid's caliber receiving special treatment.
