You can probably forgive Winnipeg Jets fans for really feeling it right now. Going into today's game against the Dallas Stars, the team boasted a 13-1-0 record on the season.
With Jets fans riding the high, the crowd has really gotten into the games this season. Not that long ago, Rutger McGroarty was the target of their excitement, and he got hit with "Where is Rutger?" chants and he failed to make the lineup for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a game against Winnipeg after demanding a trade away from the team.
With their team taking on the Dallas Stars today, Winnipeg Jets fans honed in on goaltender Jake Oettinger, who ended up getting pulled from the net after giving up 4 goals on 15 shots. Oettinger was hit with chants of "US backup!"
If you aren't sure why this is a merciless taunt, Jake Oettinger has a chance to represent the US at the 2025 Four Nations Face-off coming up in February. If he does make it, it will most likely to be as the backup as Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck, who is a fellow American.
It was just a year ago that the ownership group of the Winnipeg Jets lamented poor season ticket sales. The team saw a modest rise in season tickets at the beginning of 2024-25.
If the Winnipeg Jets can continue to play the way it has so far, or even anywhere close to it, ticket sales won't be an issue for the remainder of the games, or the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Let's just hope fans don't get too ruthless along the way.
