Seth Jones is locked into a deal until 2027 with the Blackhawks, but now, teams are calling Chicago to potentially add the veteran defenseman, despite carrying one of the biggest salary cap hits in the entire NHL.
The Chicago Blackhawks haven't taken the steps forward that many expected of them in 2024/25, and earlier in the season, it led to veteran Seth Jones calling out his teammates.
Since that point, things haven't gotten better, although Jones hasn't publicly called out any teammates since, and now, it appears the veteran star could be on the way out at the trade deadline.
Despite having a salary cap hit of $9 million until the 2027 campaign, insider Darren Dreger has now revealed that several teams around the league are calling Chicago to check in on his availability.
With those calls, teams are likely gauging just how much of Jones' deal the Blackhawks are willing to retain salary on, because while the salary cap continues to go up, his deal is still a huge one that contending teams likely aren't able to take on fully.
In 29 games this season, the 30-year old has tallied a solid 3 goals and 16 points, and while he hasn't posted a positive goal differential individually since 2019/20, teams see how his skillset could fit in on their teams as they look to contend.
Dreger didn't go into any details on who the teams calling Chicago are and what those conversations have involved thus far, but at this point, it makes perfect sense for Chicago to look to move on from Jones, and even with retention, if they can move him and save some money, it will go a long way to potentially pushing for a big free agent in the summer.
