Colorado Avalanche Coach Jared Bednar Rips Officiating After Blown Call Leads To Goal
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar was fuming during his post-game press conference, where he put major blame on horrible officiating that cost his team a goal.
Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar was incensed Thursday night, even after his team pulled off an exhilarating overtime comeback victory.
Anger from a third-period no-call in which officials did not whistle the play dead after goalie Scott Wedgewood was hurt in the crease, after a Buffalo player was pushed into him, leaving the goalie down and in a precarious position, the Sabres scored instead of the play being stopped for safety reasons.
«If he's hurt and he's not getting up, and they can evaluate that, and they're standing right there looking at it, the whistle should go,» Bednar said after the Avalanche rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat the Sabres 6-5 in overtime. «It's just that simple. For them to just let it go and then allow the goal is insanity to me.»
The whole controversial play was when Sabres forward Zach Benson, being hit by center Parker Kelly, dove into Scott Wedgewood's right leg. Zach Benson got back up with possession of the puck and eventually scored with Wedgewood on the ice injured.
Jared Bednar challenged the goal for goaltender interference, knowing he'd probably lose the call.
«The referee said (the whistle) wasn't blown because we put their guy into Scott,» Bednar said. «I said, 'I don't give a (expletive). He's hurt.' They're standing there. He's sitting there. He's hurt. Blow the whistle. If the puck is in the net-front still and they were hacking away at it and it goes in, I'd say fine. But as soon as the puck squirts to the corner, they've got to blow it dead. They do it all the time for regular players, because of player safety. The rule would state that we have to touch it. But they don't follow that rule. They never follow that rule.»

A woozy Wedgewood was eventually helped off the ice and out of the game. Mackenzie Blackwood replaced Wedgewood in goal. Bednar told reporters that Wedgewood would be further evaluated and is likely out for a period of time.
The play only served to spark the Avalanche. Jonathan Drouin scored late in regulation to tie it up. Devon Toews sealed the victory on a breakaway 48 seconds into overtime.
An upset Bednar did say he intends to discuss the matter with the NHL or expects the league to follow up with him, still visibly frustrated.
