The Penguins have been on a rollercoaster the entire season. After building some momentum, they are once again fighting for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
One of the common themes this season has been injuries, particularly on the blue line. Marcus Pettersson was just activated off injured reserve, only to see veteran Kris Letang take his place on the IR.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have now acquired defenseman Colton Poolman from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for forward Bennett MacArthur, as was announced by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas.
Colton Poolman is signed through the 2024-25 season, carrying an NHL average annual value of $775,000. He will report to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.
The 29-year-old defenseman has spent his five pro seasons in the AHL, suiting up for Rochester, Calgary, and Stockton.
A 6-foot-1, 200-pounder, Poolman has skated in 218 AHL games and recorded six goals, 34 assists, and a plus-33 rating. He has also chipped in three assists in 27 Calder Cup Playoff contests.
Before turning pro, the East Grand Forks, the Minnesota native played four seasons at the University of North Dakota from 2016-2020 and served as team captain in his senior year.
He notched 75 points (18 goals, 57 assists) in 146 regular-season games during his collegiate career.
It's unclear if the Penguins see him as a future piece on their blue line in 2024-25 or whether this is simply just an AHL trade, but for now, it's easy to see that the team is being proactive in making moves, as they look to build for the future and make a run later this season.
