Despite off-season optimism, the Detroit Red Wings have struggled this season, posting a 13-16-4 record through their first 33 games, putting them on the outside looking in at a Stanley Cup Playoffs spot in the Eastern Conference, with Head Coach Derek Lalonde becoming frustrated with the teams performance.
Now, they've been dealt a major blow, as Lalonde has confirmed that both Simon Edvinsson and Ben Chiarot will miss their next and final game before the holiday break.
For Edvinsson, this will be his third straight game missed due to injury, but for Chiarot the news appears to be worse, as Lalonde confirmed that he will need to undergo further evaluation when the team meets again after the holiday break.
Fortunately for Edvinsson, the 21-year old with a solid 3 goals and 13 points through 30 games this year, he was seen skating before the game, so while he's out for now, this is good news for his potential availability moving forward.
Given that the team made their Stanley Cup goals known at the beginning of the season, this is just yet another blow after they have struggled this season mightily, as they now sit just four points ahead of the Buffalo Sabres for last place in the Atlantic Division.
We will bring updates on Chiarot when they become available, as a loss for an extended period of time would be another brutal blow to these Red Wings, and in the place of these two injury issues, Albert Johansson and William Lagesson will slot into the lineup for now as they look to turn around recent momentum and push for a playoff spot.
