This may be something we see happen in the NHL someday. A couple of reports state goaltending legend Patrick Roy will have a major award named after him this weekend by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
"Commissioner Mario Cecchini will confirm this during a press conference organized on the sidelines of the Quebec Remparts game on Sunday, before which the champion banners of the Gilles-Courteau Trophy and the Memorial Cup will be raised. Roy will also be there. - TVA Nouvelles The Patrick Roy Award will be given annually to the best QMJHL goaltender in the regular season. It is essentially the league's version of the NHL's Vezina Trophy.
Roy is co-owner of the Quebec Remparts and served as the team's general manager and head coach for several years. Roy won both the QMJHL's Gilles-Courteau Trophy and the Canadian Hockey League's Memorial Cup in those roles in 2023. However, he had said before the season began that this would be his last as GM and coach for the Remparts, and the team has since named two new people to those roles.
Roy is, of course, one of the best goaltenders (and arguably THE best goaltender) to ever put on the pads in the NHL. He won Stanley Cups with both the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche before retiring. Roy's list of records, awards and personal achievements as a netminder is very long.
