Matt Rempe has been with the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack for several weeks now, and after being recalled, he has addressed his development over that time.
The New York Rangers finally traded Kaapo Kakko after months of speculation this week, and following the move they made the intriguing decision to recall Matt Rempe from the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack.
The move brought with it plenty of controversy, as Rangers fans out there have become frustrated with the lack of development from the menace, who has gained a reputation around the league that has made it hard for him to play his game in the NHL.
Now, it appears he's finally found his game again, as the 6-foot-7 forward has now addressed the media for the first time since his recall, with the 23-year old seemingly confident on the back of solid play in the AHL.
"I wouldn't say a reset. I think it's all just development. I've got a long journey ahead of me. I've come a long way in a short time, and I think that it's best thing for me always is just keep developing. My first year in Hartford, I don't think I played over 12 minutes once. I don't think I played a single second of special teams ever. So, I think that for me to go and suddenly play 18 minutes - not just be given that, but earn it, as well - and be very effective in those minutes, I think it's very beneficial. I think that means that my game came a long way."
During his time with the Wolf Pack, Rempe has tallied 3 goals and 5 points in 18 games played, and while this doesn't mean he's going to come back into the fold in New York and play like a first liner, it may mean however that if he can show those improvements he could be the spark this team needs.
"I want to be myself. Bring a lot of energy, bring speed, physicality - just play my game. Bring some youthful energy and try to do the best I can do. Just go have fun, play hard, get under the other team's skin."
Since arriving in the NHL, Rempe has been pigeonholed into a fighting role that, while it's something he can do, it's clearly not his natural game, and now he has the opportunity to prove that in the coming days and weeks.
