Oof! That's probably the best way to describe it as the Pittsburgh Penguins scored and absolutely embarrassing own-goal last night against the Arizona Coyotes.
With just over four minutes left in the third period, and the Pittsburgh Penguins going on the powerplay down by one goal, the decision was made to pull the goaltender on the delayed penalty. Defenceman Kris Letang was trying to get the team set up to go down to the other end of the ice. Evgeni Malkin had just jumped off the bench and was heading back behind his own net. That's when Letang decided on a no-look back pass to Malkin that he clearly wasn't ready for. Malkin tried to stop the puck from going in the net, but it was too late.
"Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin combine on a huge goal... for the Coyotes.
The nightmare scenario when you pull your goalie on a delayed penalty.
4-2 Coyotes. Lawson Crouse gets credit." The own-goal gave the Coyotes a 4-2 lead late in the game. Arizona would score one more for good measure to end the game 5-2. It's going to be a while before Letang, Malking and the rest of the Penguins are able to forget about this one.
