Doug Armstrong and the St. Louis Blues have already been busy making moves this season.
It is pretty clear the team will not be making the playoffs and as a result, Armstrong is already preparing for the trade deadline.
For example, last month, he traded veteran defenseman Scott Perunovich to the New York Islanders.
The following day he made a much more shocking move by placing Brandon Saad on waivers to terminate his contract.
Those moves are small fries compared to what Armstrong has planned next though.
According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, the Blues GM is shopping his captain Brayden Schenn, and is expecting a 'mammoth' return for the 33-year-old.
That being said, most fans would probably tell you that Schenn is not worth a 'mammoth' return.
It seems that the belief is that Armstrong is being very vocal about this process, hoping that he can artificially increase Schenn's trade value with this odd negotiating tactic.
It is understandable that Armstrong does not want to be lowballed, especially when he is dealing with his captain, but let's face the facts.
Schenn is a 33-year-old with three years left on his contract at 6.5 million dollars a year.
He has 11 goals and 30 points through 54 games this season and had just 20 goals and 46 points in 82 games last year.
That is the kind of production good teams would expect from their 3rd line center, not a second-liner.
Since the teams that are going to be interested in Schenn are all Stanley Cup contenders, they will likely be playing him in that 3rd line role, and 6.5 million dollars is a lot to pay for that position.
Furthermore, Schenn's advanced analytics are not pretty, with some models showing him as one of the worst-value contracts in the entire NHL.
As such, other general managers will likely be wary of trading for him, especially if the Blues are unwilling to retain on his contract.
While he might be a good fit for teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs or Ottawa Senators, those teams likely won't be willing to give up too much for him as there will be other options available.
