Auston Matthews To Miss Saturday's Game After Reaggravating A Previous Injury
Auston Matthews has missed plenty of time this season through injury, and now it appears he'll miss more time after reaggravating the injury.
Earlier in the year, there were fears that Auston Matthews would miss months of action after dealing with an injury that he has seemingly never fully recovered from, although he would find his way back into the lineup in recent weeks.
Now, TSN's Chris Johnston is reporting that the Maple Leafs captain will be sidelined yet again as the team battle the the New York Islanders on Saturday, as he is considered day-to-day with that same injury.
His status for Monday's final game before the holiday break is up in the air, but given how valuable Matthews is to their lineup, it makes sense to give him that game off as well to get almost a full week to heal what has clearly been hindering him for weeks now.
Despite still dealing with the injury, Matthews' play has remained solid on the Maple Leafs top line, as the star forward has posted an impressive 11 goals and 23 points in 24 games, but now he faces another potential stint on the sidelines as he clearly never got back to 100% upon his return.
This will likely result in Max Domi once more sliding into the position of 1C alongside Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies, and with the Maple Leafs posting a solid record in the absence of Matthews, they'll be confident that they can remain competitive without him.
While a 1 or 2 game absence and a week off would be ideal for the team, they need Matthews at 100% if they are to make a push in the Stanley Cup Playoffs here, so expect the team to proceed with an abundance of caution as they deal with this same injury.
