Former NHLer Compares J. T. Miller's Feuding Role in Vancouver to Former Leafs Defenseman Dion Phaneuf
While the feud in Vancouver wages on, former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Jay Rosehill has shared his thoughts, comparing J.T. Miller to a former teammate.
The weeks-long feud between Canucks star forwards J. T. Miller and Elias Pettersson is little more than old news, but developments on how Vancouver hopes to handle it is changing day to day.
After sharing recently that the organization has been trying to get players to work it out despite team frustrations, Elliotte Friedman shared during the recent Saturday Headlines that the team could trade either or both players.
"The Canucks are definitely, definitely looking at the market for both players, and you should be prepared for all outcomes, and there's really three of them:
neither gets dealt, one of them gets dealt, or both get dealt- that's on the table. I don't want to predict the likelihood of any particular scenario, but I think all three of those outcomes are possible."
While some analysts like Friedman shared their thoughts on what the Canucks will make of the Pettersson/Miller feud, a former Toronto Maple Leafs forward made an observation about the situation of his own.
During a recent episode of Leafs Morning Take, retired NHLer and analyst Jay Rosehill compared J. T. Miller's role to that of his former teammate Dion Phaneuf in Toronto.
Dion Phaneuf played over 1000 games in his NHL career as a defenseman, and according to Rosehill, gave teammates a hard time in hopes of amping up their game.
"It reminds me of Dion Phaneuf. When he got to Toronto, he would be hard on guys.
He'd chirp, and he was always talking, and he'd get under a guy's skin, and sometimes pick a guy that didn't like that and would shy away from him and he'd smell blood and go after that guy all the time.
You know, not to the point the guys are in tears, but close."
Rosehill continues the subject, acknowledging that this method's flaws lie in how a player may respond, which he asserts is worse for the younger players.
"You can go too far. You can push too far, and instead of motivating and challenging, you get to be putting down. I'm not saying Dion was doing that, but some guys just don't respond to that, and more than ever, nowadays, these younger players don't respond to it."
Though Rosehill backpedaled on Pettersson's response to tough love, it is hard to deny that whatever has conspired between him and Miller has not worked out in the Canucks favor.
