Early in the season, it appeared as though Alex Ovechkin would cruise past Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal scoring record in 2024/25, but unfortunately those hopes were seemingly crushed when he suffered a leg injury against the Utah Hockey Club.
However, his return has been on the horizon for quite some time, as the captain has been ramping up for a return over the past few weeks, with Head Coach Spencer Carberry giving a positive update two weeks ago.
Now, things are looking more promising than ever, with the team revealing they will reevaluate him after Friday's practice, and if he feels good and things go well, he may return on Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
This doesn't confirm that Ovechkin will be back on the ice anytime soon, as the team want him as close to 100% as possible before a potential return, but this latest update shows that he's at least preparing for the possibility of getting back on the ice.
This would be a major boost for a team that's continued rolling in their captain's absence, and with 15 goals and 25 points in 18 games played this season, if he can get back to 100% this is a team that will be a major threat all season long.
With the likes of Dylan Strome, Connor McMichael, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Aliaksei Protas all thriving with over 20 points on the season thus far, the Capitals are looking very good, and if Ovi returns, it's safe to say that they can be a Stanley Cup threat and No. 8 can close in on Wayne Gretzky's record.
