Breaking News - NHLPA interested in working to increase the salary cap for next season
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHL and NHLPA were expecting one of the largest salary cap increases in the cap era. Unfortunately the pandemic and the NHL's handling of it, led to major decreases in revenue which ultimately resulted in the league's flat cap. The league has made it clear that they are open to working with the NHLPA, but would require something in return.
The NHLPA recently announced the hiring of Marty Walsh as the new Executive Director of the Players Association, replacing Donald Fehr. Today Walsh took part in his first press conference and discussed how the NHLPA feels about working towards a salary cap increase.
At his introductory media conference, new NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh says players are "open to any conversation» about raising the salary cap, but are «not open to changing escrow." Currently, escrow is capped at 6 per cent the next three seasons.
This is a stark difference from the approach previously taken by Don Fehr. In previous negotiations it was often noted that the players often felt like their best interests weren't always served by Fehr. In many instances it seemed as if the players made all the concessions during negotiations.
It will be interesting to see how Walsh goes forward. Are the players really willing to accept only a $1,000,000 cap increase? Or will the parties be able to come together on an agreement?
