Carey Price shares details of the mental health issue that led him to the NHL Substance Abuse Program
Carey Price is without a doubt one of the top 3 goaltenders of his generation. Drafted 5th overall in the 2005 NHL Draft, Price made the jump to the NHL in 2007 and made an immediate impact. Price's legend continued to grow as he single handedly carrier the Canadiens through multiple seasons.
From 2013 until 2017 Price was almost unbeatable putting up incredible numbers. But that's when a knee injury started to catch up to Price and his numbers slowly began to slide. It seemed like the Canadiens' Stanley Cup aspirations were all but over at that point.
Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought the North Division. In a season that the Canadiens would have likely missed the playoffs they were granted an opportunity to win the Cup. Price took that opportunity and ran with it. Again putting the Habs on his back and carrying them to the Cup Finals, where they'd lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Now a combination of that loss and his injuries are eating at Price, in a way that is negatively impacting his overall health.
Price said that the most difficult part is "working for something for over 14 years, being so close and having it ripped away from you at the last moment."
He also mentioned that the therapy provided by the league's player assistance program has helped him, as he's continued to keep tabs on his mental health.
Price feels "much" more comfortable to discuss his battle with mental health after voluntarily entering the NHL's assistance program, "Asking for help when you need it is what we encourage our kids to do. And it was what needed to do."
Mental health is a constant struggle and we continue to hope for the best during Price's ongoing battle.
