Don Waddell has given an update on negotiations with former 1st-round pick Martin Necas.

Necas, drafted 12th overall in the 1st round in 2017 has not had a season under 30 points since his promotion to the NHL in 2018-2019.

He currently is an RFA and the rumors about his status have been numerous, but the Hurricanes have been quiet on this front until recently.

«We're speaking on almost a daily basis and it's getting close,» Waddell said. «I can only speak for my side of it, but it's going to get done.»

To get there, the Hurricanes have to go through the arbitration with defenseman Maxim Lajoie, after arbitration is settled the Hurricanes would be able to go through a buyout period, which would relieve some cap space.

According to CapFriendly com, which tracks NHL player salaries, the Hurricanes had $1.88 million in available cap space on Thursday.

In the meantime, there has been a discussion of signing the Center to a bridge deal with an AAV of $3 million per year.

The deal is expected to be done soon, without much issue, as defenseman Jake Gardiner is placed on LTIR.

Gardiner's hit of $4.05 million will be off the books in a year as well.
