When the Toronto Maple Leafs drafted Auston Matthews 1st overall in 2016 they hit the jackpot. Matthews is one of the best players in the league and arguably already the best player in Maple Leafs history.
Ever since Matthews joined the Maple Leafs he has experienced significant regular season success, but neither he or the Maple Leafs have been able to break through into the second round. The Leafs have lost 6 consecutive playoff series in the Auston Matthews Era.
Since his arrival many fan bases have claimed Matthews is just biding his time before he returns to his native Arizona, to play for the Coyotes. This was compounded when Matthews signed a deal that walked him directly to free agency as early as possible.
However, Hockey Insider Chris Johnston of Sportsnet doesn't believe the Coyotes have any chance of acquiring Matthews:
I can say with 100% certainty without a shadow of doubt he's not going to play in Arizona guaranteed.
