The NHLPA, current Arizona Coyotes' players, team owners, and fans have all expressed concerns about the viability and professionalism of the Coyotes' new rink at Arizona State University. The team has now committed to the move from Gila River, and is locked in to play the next three seasons in front of around only 3,000 fans. Now, there's reports of dressing rooms in trailers, and shuttles of golf carts between facilities.
The Coyotes have since endowed an additional $20 million in renovations to make the arena NHL ready, including the expansion of team practicing facilities, home and away dressing rooms, and capacity for broadcasting. These are all promising goals, albeit in a peewee capacity arena, but some new details shared by Katie Strang and Sean Shapiro of the Athletic suggest there could be some serious challenges.
While the Coyotes renovate office spaces to fit the needs of an NHL quality arena, they may have to make do with temporary solutions. Strang and Shapiro report,
«Trailers have been discussed as a temporary solution. For shuttling to and from the Ice Den rink, which is separated by about a 100- to 150-yard walk, one option being explored is a rubberized mat that allows players to cross the parking lot in full gear and skate guards. Golf carts could also be used.»
Obviously, this does not meet the standards of an NHL practice arena, and is frankly an embarrassment to the league if this were to transpire. One anonymous player in Strang and Shapiro's article was quoted on the financial state of the Coyotes, and said «(They're) costing everyone money. Year after year.»
With the amount of resistance to the ASU move from all angles, it will be interesting to see the future of the NHL and the Arizona Coyotes. That meaning, if there is a future at all.
