Toronto Maple Leafs' GM Kyle Dubas was made available for Media Day. One of the many topics he covered was the health status of first round pick Rodion Amirov.

Toronto announced earlier this year that Amirov was diagnosed with a brain tumour. This was discovered while he was undergoing treatment for an unrelated injury. Amirov underwent treatment in Germany and did not play for the remainder of last season.

Dubas said the following on Amirov

We had a followup with him and the doctors that are managing it from Moscow and Germany. It has become a more difficult situation to manage in person as things have developed in Europe. Where he is at is that he is through his final round of chemotherapy. What we are working on now is a consultation appointment to see if he is able to travel here and be around the team to train, participate in on-ice training, and hopefully, return to play. That is where we are at.

It is great to see the soon to be 22 year old, (October 2, 2001) healthy after such a difficult time in his life. Like Brian Boyle, Oskar Lindblom and Ivan Miroshnichenko who were diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and all managed to come back from their battle. Amirov is now another player to do just that. His return is inspirational to say the least.
