It was well known that Claude Giroux would be traded from the Philadelphia Flyers early in the season, after it became clear the Flyers would not be in contention to win. Wanting to do right by their captain, and star player of 1000 games within the franchise, the Flyers moved Giroux to the Florida Panthers at the deadline.
Just as clear as the Flyers' decision to trade Giroux is the fact the Panthers will not be able to re-sign Giroux this summer, due to salary cap restraints. So begins the speculation as to where Giroux will sign in free agency this summer.
Elliotte Friedman and Bruce Garrioch have recently reported that the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens will be interested in signing the veteran star centre.
Giroux, who has 905 points in 1004 games is 35-years-old, is probably interested in having a chance to win a Stanley Cup at the twilight of his career. If his season with Florida results in that, it seems plausible that Giroux would go play in those two cities. Giroux is a francophone and childhood Habs fan, but also spent time living in Ottawa.
If his run with the Florida Panthers doesn't result in a Stanley Cup, will Giroux really leave to play for one of two rebuilding teams?
