NHL awards the Minnesota Wild an additional 2nd round draft pick
The Minnesota Wild drafted Filip Johansson in the first round in 2018. Johansson was a pick by then-General Manager Paul Fenton, and as a defenseman, he was slated to go much later than in the 1st round.
In what seems to be another course correction by Bill Guerin, the Minnesota Wild will receive a compensatory 2nd Round Draft Pick, 56th overall in 2022 for not signing Johansson.
Johansson has been reported to have an uneventful season in the SHL with 3 goals and 8 assists in 47 games, with the Frölunda HC. With this news, the Minnesota Wild will select twice in the 2nd round this year.
Hockey Prospecting estimated that Johansson had just a 2% chance of becoming a star (scoring 0.45-plus points per game in his career) and a 15% chance of being an NHL player (200-plus games). Only Tanner Pearson (30th overall in 2012) had a worse chance of stardom among any first-round pick in the decade. No one had a worse chance of being an NHLer. This will give the Wild two 2nd round picks this summer after acquiring a pick in exchange for Jack McBain. The Wild had traded their own 2nd rounder for Marc-Andre Fleury, who at this time appears to be a pure rental.
