The first game between the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning didn't go as anyone expected. The first period was tightly contested and ended 1-1. But halfway through the second period the Rangers started to take over and scored 4 unanswered goals to end the game, winning 6-2. But in the closing minutes of the game the Tampa Bay Lightning wanted to make sure the Rangers knew they weren't going to go down without a fight.
It started off late in the third period with Brand Hagel absolutely leveling Barclay Goodrow into the boards. It was a clean hit but in a bad area as Goodrow's back slammed into the boards. Fortunately he seemed okay and continued to play. Then a few minutes later as the play was whistled down, Goodrow gave Hagel a few extra shots after the whistle. The two got into it and then everyone on the ice joined in on the fray.
The two big men on the ice, Ryan Reaves and Pat Maroon try to get into it but a linesman unwisely steps between them and ends up getting sandwiched. Cal Foote also tries really hard to get anyone to drop the gloves with him, but no one would oblige the 6'4" defenseman. It ended with almost every player on the ice getting thrown out to try as the referees tried to calm things down. This is going to be a much more competitive serious than most people predicted.
