Earlier this year, the Nashville Predators placed forward Eli Tolvanen on waivers. Tolvanen was a first round draft pick of the Predators in 2017, and had some flashes of offensive promise in his time with Nashville. His offensive talents and finishing ability should have been in-demand from the Preds, and it seems general manager David Poile realizes that now.
In a recent interview with a Nashville sports radio station, David Poile admitted that waiving Tolvanen «could be a mistake on our part».
Poile recounted his belief that Tolvanen needs time on the power play, and how the Predators couldn't give him that opportunity. He notes that now in Seattle, Tolvanen is producing with his power play time. In 5 games with the Kraken, Tolvanen has 3 goals and 5 points.
Poile seems to lament the fact that the Predators couldn't find an opportunity for Tolvanen, despite the fact that he brings a much needed scoring touch. Tolvanen consistently played down in the lineup, below older players like Johansen, Granlund, Duchene, and Jankowski, all of whom are having somewhat underwhelming seasons.
Poile concludes the interview saying he was hoping Tolvanen would clear waivers to get games in the AHL, and although he was claimed, that the move was necessary in the end.
