Tuesday night, game one between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning took place. It wasn't the most competitive game as Tampa Bay controlled most of the play throughout. However, the referees weren't doing the Panthers any favours either.
The Tampa Bay Lightning were awarded 6 powerplays, while Florida only received 3. Nikita Kucherov capitalized on one of those powerplays in the third period but not without controversy. Lightning forward Anthony Cirelli appeared to make contact with Sergei Bobrovsky.
While trying to screen Bobrovsky, it appears Cirelli makes contact with Bobrovsky's head while the shot is coming in. Florida would challenge but the goal would stand. Not everyone agreed with that decision. Former longtime NHL referee Kerry Fraser thought that play was goalie interference.
If the referees are one thing this year, it's inconsistent.
