Philadelphia Flyers General Manager willing to retain money to trade one of the team's heart and soul players
With the way the Philadelphia Flyers season is going, look for many of the teams veterans to be mentioned in trade rumors. Particularly as the March 3rd trade deadline gets closer. Even the team's leading scorer Kevin Hayes has been rumored to be traded. Hayes has thirty-six points in forty one games with the Flyers this season. At times he has been a healthy scratch from head coach John Tortorella and the team has not been competitive for quite a while, so perhaps Hayes is looking to go elsewhere. Can you really blame him?
Hayes has a twelve team no trade clause in his contract and he makes $7.1 million per season for the next three seasons after this one. So, it's not like Philadelphia can trade him anywhere. Additionally, they'd likely have to retain some salary in order to move him for future picks or prospects.
If Philadelphia retains salary, there could be some playoff teams that would want the big centreman in their lineup come playoff time. This could be the only way Hayes is moved out of Philadelphia with so many other NHL organizations near or above the salary cap.
From Philadelphia's point of view this team needs a rebuild. Things within the Flyers organization have really not gone well the last several seasons and it is time to move on. Look for Philadelphia to be an active seller at this year's deadline.
