Robertson has 2 goals and 5 points in ten games so far this year, which is excellent production from a rookie on an entry-level contract. However, despite his offensive production, Sheldon Keefe clearly believes the team has a better chance to win without him in the lineup.
At practice today, Sheldon Keefe was reluctant to explain the decision to scratch Robertson again.
What Keefe is referencing in the latter part of the quote here is the public criticism towards Robertson's development as a player. Many have been clamouring for him to get into games, be it at the NHL or AHL level, for the sake simply playing. After missing much of the last two years with injury, and still looking like one of the most promising prospects in the organization, Robertson needs to play games to develop into the best player possible.
Keefe seems to be alluding here that the team believes Robertson benefits enough from his odd opportunities to get into games and consistent NHL level practices.
Additionally, the decision to continuously scratch Robertson and play Alex Kerfoot in the top six has been met with criticism, and obvious offensive deficits. All of Keefe's actions seem to point towards the Leafs wanting to play a more stable, defensive game; something they don't think Robertson is ready for.
