The San Jose Sharks rebuild being derailed by 3 players who refuse to be traded
The San Jose Sharks moved on from Brent Burns last summer. The Sharks traded Burns for a depth piece in Steven Lorentz, goalie prospect Eetu Makiniemi and a 2023 3rd-round pick.
However, there is a discussion on Twitter that the Sharks will not be able to move, Marc-Eduard Vlasic, Tomas Hertl, and Logan Couture.
The reason that there's speculation around the three Sharks lifers, is due to their respective no-trade clauses. At this time it sounds like these 3 players will refuse to waive their trade protection.
However Mike Grier, unlike Doug Wilson who has led the Sharks down their recent dark path, was able to move one veteran for assets. Couture's contract is expensive, at $8 Million AAV, Hertl's is not so unreasonable at $5.7 Million AAV, and Vlasic's up there along with Couture's at $7 Million for 2022-2023. So in all these deals, Grier may have to retain a percentage to move Couture and Vlasic if possible.
Couture currently has a 3-team trade list, which allows him to block a trade to 28 other teams.
