The worst fighter in NHL history has officially announced his retirement
Former NHLer Alexander Semin is retiring from pro hockey. Known best for his nine seasons in a Capitals jersey playing alongside his best friend Alex Ovechkin. He also had stops with the Carolina Hurricanes and Montreal Canadiens during his time in the NHL.
Semin's final season in the NHL was during the 2015-2016 while playing with the Canadiens. He was waived in December. After going unclaimed, Semin refused to report to the AHL and sought a contract termination the following day. He signed with Metallurg Magnitogorsk a few days later.
Semin will now close his career in the
2022 seasons by hosting a charity game in Krasnoyarsk where he was born. The game will take place at the Platinum Arena. Players invited to play include his long-time bestie Alex Ovechkin, former Caps winger Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexander Radulov, Evgeni Malkin, Pavel Datsyuk, and Kirill Kaprizov. The proceeds from the ticket sales will go to orphanages in the area as well as to the development of sled hockey in Krasnoyarsk.
The 38 year old's best season in the NHL was during the 2009-2010 season he scored 40 goals and 44 assists for 84 points in 73 games. This is the only season a Caps player has reached the 40 goal mark in the Ovechkin era outside of Ovi himself. He was a fan favorite during his tenure in D.C., with elusive puck-handling ability and a knack for scoring electrifying goals. He put up 408 points (197 goals, 211 assists) in 469 games for Washington.
Semin did not play at all during the 2021-22 season. The 38-year-old works as an advisor to the director of the Krasnoyarsk hockey club Sokol in the VHL league, the second tier of hockey in the country.
He had an entertaining wild slap fight technique when he needed to bring it out. In his one recorded fight in the NHL against Marc Staal. You'd have to give him the win right?
