Fresh off of giving J.T. Miller a 7-year $56 million extension, the Vancouver Canucks are looking at locking up another key member of their leadership group.

A couple of months ago it was believed that the Horvat extension was closer than the J.T. Miller situation.

Bo Horvat has been with the Vancouver Canucks his entire career since he was drafted in the first round in 2013. He was named the captain of the Vancouver Canucks at the start of the 2019-2020 season. According to TSN's Farhan Lalji, the Vancouver Canucks have been trying to extend Bo Horvat all summer to try and keep him for the rest of his career. But talks have stalled and there are a few reasons for this.

The Vancouver Canucks are currently sitting $2.7 million over the salary cap. This is before J.T. Miller's $8 million per year salary kicks in next year. The salary cap situation doesn't get any better next year as according to CapFriendly the Canucks are projected to only have $14.6 million in cap space for the 2023-2024 season with only 14 players signed. The Canucks would like to shed some long-term salary before signing Horvat but that has proven difficult.

The Vancouver Canucks have only made the playoffs one time in the past 7 seasons. That was during the 2020 bubble. For a team that hasn't had any success, maybe re-signing everyone on their team to giant extensions isn't such a great idea. It's how they got in this mess in the first place.
