When it comes to NHL players and evaluating their worth points aren't everything. In the grand scheme of things, certain players bring different aspects to the game that make them uniquely important. However, when all is said and done, a player's ability to contribute on a score sheet is often registered as the most important.
The Philadelphia Flyers drafted forward Travis Konecny 24th overall in the 2015 NHL draft. The forward has played his entire career in Philadelphia and has been a vital part of the team. Konecny currently has one year remaining on his current contract paying him $5,500,000 per season.
Over his career Konecny has been very important to the Flyers and last season he posted the best statistical season of his career scoring 33 goals and adding 35 assists for 68 points. With this increased production comes expectations of a raise on his next contract, but no one could have prepared the Flyers for the request he and his agent would make.
Insider David Pagnotta shared the following:
While Konecny brings value beyond his contract. It's hard to see a situation where his production brings him anywhere near doubling his current contract. For a player who plays a hard-nosed game, it is difficult to see him age and gracefully and a deal anywhere in this neighborhood will likely be a cap albatross for the Flyers going forward.
