Late last night just after 11 pm Eastern time, the Calgary Flames traded Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers for Johnathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar, prospect Cole Schwindt, and a 2025 first round pick.
After the deal many Flames fans would question the move. Some Flames fans loved the move because they knew Tkachuk wasn't going to sign long-term while others thought they could have received more.
The same thing happened in Florida some are hyped to have Matthew Tkachuk while others feel the Flames fleeced the Panthers, feeling the Panthers paid way too much. Shipping off one of the best Florida Panthers players of all-time in Johnathan Huberdeau.
The difference in this deal though is big for the Florida Panthers, Matthew Tkachuk just signed a brand new 8 year contract extension with the Panthers. While Johnathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar are both in the final year of their current contracts and are both pending unrestricted free agents at the end of this season.
With that said not even 24 hours after the deal Hockey Insider David Pagnotta reports, teams have already began calling the Calgary Flames to see if they will be flipping Jonathan Huberdeau for more assets.
As I mentioned a few minutes ago on @SiriusXMNHL, some teams have already inquired about Huberdeau, wondering if Flames will consider flipping him.
Also, Huberdeau was expecting to hear from FLA on extension talks. Didn't happen. Dealt instead.
It will be interesting to see if the Flames can sign Huberdeau because if they can't he could have a VERY short time in Calgary.
