The National Hockey League has been trending towards naming younger captains in recent years. It started with Sidney Crosby, more recently Connor McDavid and now Nick Suzuki with the Montreal Canadiens a few short days ago. However, some players aren't a fan of younger players wearing the C.
According to Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand, he doesn't believe giving a younger player a teams captaincy is the right move.
It's almost unfair to be giving these young kids the captaincy at 20, 21, 22, because they don't have any idea what it's like to be a captain in the NHL, you're setting a kid up for failure by doing that.
On one hand, Marchand has been around a long time and I take nothing away from him as a player, on the ice he's a pest that does his job extremely well, maybe this is a part of that.
Maybe Marchand's opinion is tainted by playing with two veteran captains like Chara and Bergeron. But in multiple situations young leaders have failed in the NHL. Prime candidates like Vincent Lecavalier had significant issues early on in his career due to having the C given to him far too young.
So do you agree with Marchand?
