When Jonathan Huberdeau was traded from the Florida Panthers to the Calgary Flames, there was a sudden surge in Montreal Canadiens fans who felt Huberdeau might be willing to sign with his hometown team next summer. The fans felt maybe the star winger might be the next piece to their rebuild.

Could Huberdeau be the Canadiens version of John Tavares?

Well many thought that might be the case Huberdeau had other ideas. Huberdeau's only intention was to play for a team that wanted him. In his own words if Montreal wanted him, they'd have traded for him. But they didn't.

"I know a lot of people were saying that: 'Play one year [in Calgary] and then play for Montreal," Huberdeau told the 32 Thoughts podcast.

"As much as love Montreal, I dunno. think it's a tough city for a French- Canadian. Calgary traded for me. If Montreal wanted to trade for me, they would've traded for me. That's how see it. And want to play for a team that wants me. Calgary wanted me, so that's why I wanted to sign a big extension."

So while players like Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk were in search of new places to play, it's clear a player like Huberdeau truly valued loyalty and committment. Something that is extremely rare these days.
