Last night's game between the Washington Capitals and the Seattle Kraken got rather intense, particularly near the end of the second period when Seattle defensemen Jamie Oleksiak hit Washington's Alexander Alexeyev.
Oleksiak was assessed a 5 minute major penalty on the play, while Alexeyev didn't return to the game after he got up under his own power.
Now, according to the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety, Oleksiak will have a hearing today to decide how many games he'll get as a result of the play:
The DoPS has been busy in recent days, but In this case I think it's just a bigger player hitting a smaller player which changes the angle of impact. Alexeyev is 6'4» while Oleksiak is listed at 6'7». Head contact was made, but the height difference played into it.
When you have a bigger guy hitting someone who is three plus inches shorter, these things tend to happen.
I don't think there was any intent to injure on Oleksiak's part, just a really unfortunate play. However, because there was a major penalty handed out, the NHL has to review it as part of their process
