NHL admits they have space for more jersey advertisements, but how many spots?
The National Hockey League once claimed they had no intention of ever adding advertisements to their jerseys. Obviously the league has deviated from their original opinion and have already added one and location to their jerseys. While the league claims that the plan is currently to only use the one spot, that is clearly not the case.
One ad patch. Nothing more. For now. Keith Wachtel, NHL chief business officer and executive vice president of global partnerships, said that if you asked Bettman, he would say it will not expand beyond one ad.
"But we also had a position, like every league, to say that we weren't going to put an ad on our jersey," Wachtel said, "So you never want to say 'never' but that is not in the foreseeable future."
Despite this claim that there are no plans to expand this, the league has already designated three other spots on the jersey as future ad locations.
The NHL has designated four spots for jersey ads: left and right shoulders, and left and right chest.
"In the current program, it's one patch, in one area only," Wachtel said.
While the advertisements on the jerseys don't impact the flow of the game it surely is a distraction. If you've ever seen a European hockey game the jerseys are littered with advertisements.
If this is the course of the action the NHL chooses to take it's clearly because Gary Bettman has failed to grow revenues and the game accordingly. While every other league in the world grows at an exponential rate the NHL is still catering to poverty franchises.
